Shoshana went to Dulles International Airport to meet everyone for the jet down to Rio. Drew had told her at the last minute he would meet everyone in Rio—he had ‘business’ to attend to first. Shoshana had opened her mouth to protest, but quickly closed it. She knew she didn’t have a choice.

Sho was excited to fly private—she couldn’t even imagine what it would be like. She was used to long airport lines, being scrutinized by security guards, and penalized for a small travel lotion that was still too big. Flying private, Sho discovered, was much less of a hassle. Sho was starting to realize that being part of the wealthy class wasn’t just fun and glamorous—but that it was also outrageously convenient.

Sho thought about how money made life so much easier—getting places faster, receiving better service, eating better food, having more perks. Sure, things weren’t perfect—having money didn’t make problems go away, but it sure made coping with them a hell of a lot easier.

Sho sat on the plane in her big cushy, caramel-colored leather seat—no commercial blue fabric seats like she was used to. Birdie sat across from Sho, and Steven sat behind Birdie facing toward the cockpit. Zoey and Mark sat across from each other parallel to Sho and Birdie. Rachel and Alex sat toward the back of the plane; Rachel was on a bench seat with her legs up.

Sho was upset that Drew wasn’t flying over with them, but she wasn’t surprised. She had grown accustomed to Drew meeting her places, even Brazil. He put his job first; Sho knew she came in second, though she wished it was a closer second.

The beginning of the flight was spent discussing Rio’s different beaches: Ipanema Beach versus Copacabana Beach, Leblon versus Barra—a conversation Sho could not participate in because other than the song ‘The Girl from Ipanema,’ she didn’t know much about Brazil. Birdie talked about the merits of fractional jet ownership as compared with owning one, how all of her friends were jet card-carrying members and how much they loved it. Shoshana laughed to herself thinking how the only card-carrying she did involved her DSW card.

After awhile, Birdie and Alex popped their sleeping pills; Sho discovered it was their tried and true method of flying. Rachel and Steven dozed off eventually as well, leaving Sho, Zoey, and Mark up talking and playing cards.

Toward the latter half of the flight, Mark and Sho were the only ones awake. Because of the seat configuration, Birdie was technically next to Mark even though he was across the aisle. Sho’s seat was across from Birdie’s making it harder to hear Mark. They talked about surfing and how Sho was too afraid to try it.

Despite attempting to talk softly, Zoey woke up, telling them to whisper. She offered to switch seats with Sho so she wouldn’t be disturbed further. Sho found herself in the seat across from Mark. A few minutes later, Zoey was out cold again and everyone else on the plane didn’t seem to be waking up any time soon.
